The level 3 livestock technician apprenticeship is designed for those looking to take the next step in their agricultural career developing advanced skills in livestock management, farm performance, and sustainable animal production. This apprenticeship builds on foundational farming knowledge, helping learners manage livestock health, nutrition, and welfare with a focus on compliance, technology, and business improvement.

Delivered nationally by Skern Skills, the programme combines on-farm learning, expert coaching, and practical experience to prepare apprentices for skilled, responsible roles within the agricultural sector.

During this apprenticeship learners will:

  • Manage livestock health and welfare, including pre, during, and post-parturition care.
  • Develop and implement animal health plans and biosecurity measures.
  • Monitor, record, and analyse livestock data to improve productivity and compliance.
  • Manage nutrition and feed supply relevant to production stages.
  • Operate farm machinery, vehicles, and technology safely and efficiently.
  • Lead and supervise others to achieve farm performance targets.
  • Ensure cross-compliance with environmental and farm assurance standards.

Animal health & welfare
  • Develop and implement herd/flock health plans with veterinary support
  • Monitor animal health, disease prevention, and biosecurity measures

Key Skills

Practical livestock handling & care

  • Handle and manage livestock safely across a range of systems
  • Carry out routine tasks such as movement, treatment, and inspection
  • Maintain welfare during key periods including housing and birthing

Feeding operations and daily husbandry

  • Prepare and deliver feed using appropriate equipment and methods
  • Adjust feeding practices based on livestock needs and conditions
  • Maintain consistent daily routines to support productivity

Machinery & farm operations

  • Operate and maintain farm machinery, vehicles, and equipment safely
  • Identify faults and carry out basic maintenance tasks
  • Support efficient day-to-day livestock operations

Teamwork, communication & organisation

  • Work effectively as part of a team to complete daily farm tasks
  • Communicate clearly with colleagues and external partners
  • Plan and prioritise work in response to changing farm demands

Programme Details

Duration

This apprenticeship will typically take 14 months.

Entry Requirements
  • A strong interest in farming and livestock production.
  • GCSE Grade 2 (or equivalent) in English and Maths.
  • Learners must achieve a minimum of Functional Skills Level 2 before completion.
  • Applicants must have a suitable employer or be actively seeking one.
Expected Outcomes

On completion, apprentices will:

  • Achieve the Level 3 Livestock Technician Apprenticeship Standard.
  • Be competent in livestock management and compliance.
  • Demonstrate leadership, communication, and technical skills.
  • Complete mandatory qualifications:
    • Emergency First Aid at Work (minimum one day).
    • City & Guilds Level 2 Principles of Safe Handling and Application of Pesticides or Lantra Safe Use of Pesticides.
    • Level 2 Safe Use of Veterinary Medicines.

Funding

This apprenticeship can be fully funded through your Apprenticeship Levy Account if you are a Levy-paying employer.

If you are a Non-Levy paying employer, the government will fund 95% of the total cost, with the employer contributing the remaining 5%.

However, for apprentices aged 16 to 21, the government will fully fund 100% of the cost, with no employer contribution required.

Additionally, Skern can support you in identifying and applying for Levy Transfer funds, which can cover the full cost for other age groups—making the apprenticeship 100% fully funded for all eligible learners.
